About R.S. Broadhead:

I was born and raised in the small town of Jackson, AL, which was chosen as the back drop for my story. Growing up with very little recreational activities I had to do something to help the time pass and make things in my life sound more exciting than what they actually were. That's when it all started....a scrapbook that held a countless number of photos of my friends and me. Of course these were normal photos, but I would take these photos and create an array of different stories that lead into one blossoming fictional world. I have been married for nine years to a wonderful and very supporting man and have been blessed with two spunky, prissy girls. However, our family wouldn't be complete without our whizzy, gassy Pug. I graduated from Troy University with an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a master's degree in Business Administration.

In the midst of dragging trees, I saw Sarenah sitting on the back porch, her dress hiked up around her thighs from the heat as she was thumbing through a book. She wasn’t even acknowledging the fact that I was there, nor did she care that I could see her bare legs. She was being totally inappropriate and rude at the same time … and I liked it. I felt intrigued to my very core, so much that I had to go over and say something to her. “Hey,” I mumbled. Without looking up, she reiterated, “Hey.” My frustration grew as I clenched my fingers into my palms. “Is that book so interesting that you can’t even talk to me?” That had gotten her attention. She slammed the book shut and stood up, the dress falling back down around her ankles. “Are you so interesting that I can’t even read my book?” Her dark eyes were wild and she was glaring at me as if she wanted me to spontaneously combust. “Don’t you have a job to do? Look at this mess.” Her eyes moved to the yard. “All of these branches everywhere. My uncle will have your hide.” She was so angry. I couldn’t help myself. I wiped the sweat from my brow with the back of my hand and busted out laughing. Sarenah’s hands moved to her hips. I thought she was about to hit me. I threw up hands up in defense. “I’m …” The laughter got the best of me again. “I’m sorry, Sarenah.” I flashed her an apologetic grin. “It’s just, I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard you talk so much and you’re spatting off at me like some crazy person.” Her gaze had softened then. She bit her bottom lip so she wouldn’t crack a smile herself. “A crazy person, huh?” I nodded, stopping to really get a good look at Sarenah’s face, her stunning features and the way her dark eyes popped out in a terrific way. This was Rebecca’s sister? I had been missing out. Sarenah’s strange ways evaporated into enticement before me. I spent the rest of the evening listening to Sarenah talk as I took all of it in. The tree branches were still scattered all over the yard, but I doubted her uncle would be back anytime soon to discover the mess. Everyone knew he lived at the saloon. She talked mostly about her parents. She had a deep ache from the loss inside of her. She was in a great deal of pain that I felt my own heart hurting along with hers, for her. I found myself wrapping my arm around her and her actually letting me get away with it, but I wasn’t in it to try to make a move. I found myself wanting to comfort Sarenah, tell her everything was going to be okay. I wanted her to trust me and continue to confide in me. She leaned her head against my shoulder, being content to be there with me. It felt incredible as if I had been able to tame her so easily. She was feisty but now so serene. I could’ve lived in that moment forever and been completely content to just be lucky enough to be near her, to smell the flower fragrance in her hair as it fell down across my arm. I rubbed her shoulder with my fingertips. She started humming, the sound making the chaos within me only increase. It was in that moment that I had leaned over and my lips found hers. It had been brief but magnificent, and I was wondering if my mind was ever going to be the same. rempreorder d4da0-icon_amazon remteasers remteaser1

#TOUR and #GIVEAWAY: How To Be Manly by Maureen O'Leary Wanket

Howtobemanlybabber

How To Be ManlyWhen Fatty Matty Sullivan finds a self-help book by former football great Tad Manly at a yard sale, he secretly starts following the old pro’s advice to get in shape and get the girl. Summer goals: lose the milkshake weight, join the football team, and turn himself into the kind of guy super hot Cassie Bale will love. But between taking care of his grandfather, trying to pass remedial Algebra, and getting caught up in his friend Jester’s half-baked weed-dealing schemes, Matty’s summer isn’t quite the game-changer he’d planned. When on top of it all his dad moves back in with his own plans to get rich quick, Matty suddenly has much bigger things to worry about than football and whether or not Cassie’s going to call him back. And it turns out that there might be more to being manly than he thought. Maureen O’Leary Wanket’s debut is a sharp, comic novel about trying to do the right thing… even when you’re not sure what that is.

Excerpt #1

Bro, step on it. Don’t be a pussy,” I yell. I am fucking wasted. I feel like I am flying super high. We are going home after a party that was being held at this abandoned warehouse outside of town. It was a secret party since there was going to be a lot of underage drinking and drugs involved.
“Nix what if we get pulled over? I can’t get a fucking ticket, my parents will kill me,” Sky says, paranoid.
“Dude, my fucking father is the town judge. He will make sure nothing happens. Come on, there is a reason this car can go 180 mph. Step on the gas.”
“Fuck, this feels awesome, bro. We are flying,” Sky says, laughing.
I stick my head out the window, feeling the night’s air on my face.
“Fuck yeah, we are fucking seniors. Can’t wait to leave this place and start getting college pussy,” I scream into the night.
Then I feel the flames of hell consume me.

Excerpt #2

I was around four years old the last time I cried. I had fallen outside my friend Mandy’s house. I scrapped my knee and the blood was running down my legs and onto my new socks. I didn’t cry from the pain; I cried because my mother was going to be so upset that I ruined my new socks. She was either going to spank me or put me to bed without dinner. Mandy’s mom picked me up and sat me on her lap while she sent Jenny to get a wet paper towel and some Band-Aids. She told me to stop crying, that she knew it was going to sting, but it was going to feel better in a bit. She hugged me tight and cuddled me while we waited. I had never felt that kind of warmth before; my mother never hugged me and she certainly never cuddled me. Those were the best three minutes of my life, it felt so nice that I didn’t care if I went to bed without dinner for a whole week or got spanked.
“Olivia! Where are you? Aye wuerca,” I heard my mother yell from the front yard. Mrs. Scott was just putting on my Band-Aid when my mother knocked on the door.
“Vicki, she’s here. She just fell and scraped her knee, but she is okay now,” Mrs. Scott told my mother. As she set me on the floor she kissed my head, I cried some more, but it was happy tears this time. Mandy was so lucky.
“Well, thank you, Barbara, for taking care of my pumpkin,” she replied with her fake smile.
She extended her hand towards me so that I could take it, and as soon I did she squeezed it hard and I started crying again, and we started to walk towards our trailer.
“Olivia, I told you to stop crying. Do you want me to give a reason to cry? Only weak, pathetic people cry. If you keep cryingLa LLorona will come get you because she will think you are her niña. You won’t want to be taken by her, because even though you are afraid of me I would never kill you like she killed her children, so be grateful to me, bastardita,” she told me.
I still didn’t know if I should have been grateful or not, because I still hadn’t seen the light in life.

#REVIEW: Rogue Alliance by Michelle Bellon

rogue banner red -1-2

rogue_alliance_250x375
While still a child in Redding, California, Shyla Ericson killed her father to end years of abuse. She’d left town shortly thereafter, changed her name, and started a new life, eventually becoming a highly decorated DEA agent. But some history doesn’t stay buried. When Shyla goes undercover to bring down drug kingpin Victor Champlain, the case takes her back to a town that hasn't forgotten her, and to a past she thought she’d left behind. Then, she meets Brennan Miles, a genetically altered kidnap victim, who has been turned into a weaponized super-human. Victor helped Brennan escape from a hidden genetics research facility known only as The Institute, where he'd been held and experimented on for years. In return for his freedom, Brennan now works for Victor as his bodyguard. Shyla is drawn to Brennan's strength, and to his humanity. Even after she discovers his secret — he must have human blood to survive. Shyla knows she can’t take down Champlain by going through Brennan — he’s too strong — and he’s loyal to Victor.

Rating: 4 stars

REVIEW: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Throw one emotionally messed up cop woman together with a genetically enhanced man who feeds on blood, along with a drug cartel leader, and what do you get? This book. I never thought I would see a non-fantasy book that had an actual "feeding on blood" human. You can't really call him a vampire, but surviving on blood is just too abnormal to not call him something. Either way Brennan is one messed up dude looking for some sort of twisted version of redemption through loyalty.
Shyla is trying to stay as far away from her painful past as possible. A shame her bosses haven't figured that one out before they toss her into her old stomping grounds in an undercover scheme to bring down a major drug lord.
Overall, this was a great suspenseful book that made me connect emotionally with the characters of Shyla and Brennan. The author does an amazing job of keeping the story line going with just enough action to keep you reading. The romance was a little on the iffy side for me. While I could see the obvious route it was going for Shyla and Brennan, I really wanted her to end up with her partner. They would have made a much healthier, more long-term couple.

RavenTourBanner
Raven_ebookPromo

This is the complete Steampunk Fantasy novel – all four parts of the serial in one volume! Human life has value. The poor living in the gutter is as valuable as the rich living in a manor. The scoundrel is no less valuable than the saint. Because of this, every life a reaper takes must be redeemed. Raven has lived by this first tenet since she was trained by her father to become a reaper. But since his death, she’s been spending years redeeming the lives she’s taken. By her count, she’s even and it’s time for that life to end. If she settles down and becomes a wife, she might just feel human again. But on the way to the life she thinks she wants, the baron of New Haven asks her to complete a task which she cannot ignore… Just when Raven decides to give up on her life as an assassin, she’s pulled right back in.

My Review: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First I want to say that I'm not a steampunk kinda gal. I am a fantasy kind of gal, and Pauline Creeden has become one of my favorite authors this year. My love affair with her started with Abiding Flame, then went on to Sanctuary. This author doesn't stick with one genre like so many do. She continuously changes genres and does so absolutely flawlessly. From science fiction to post-apocalyptic and now to steampunk, she always does an incredible job of writing her stories and characters so that the reader falls in love with them.
The great part about this book is that there were just enough fantasy elements in it that made me like it.
You had a heroine who didn't like the machinations of her steampunk world, and preferred a flesh and bone horse to one of the clanking, whizzing types. She was strong enough to rely on herself and not be a whining damsel in distress, but just soft enough to realize she was falling in love with someone.
You also have a boy who somehow sends all machines into absolute destruction and chaos whenever he has one of his episodes. That story line itself made me continue to read, I need to get to the bottom of that. The author then twisted that to show it was truly a gift, not a curse as his father thinks...or was it?
I have fallen in love with this author, and hope others will read her books to see what an awesome writer she truly is.
